“Among other things, the Cross is a symbol of the spiritual integration that Jesus manifests. It was the Fathers of the Church who interpreted the horizontal beam of the cross as Christ embracing the whole of humanity. They understood the vertical beam as bridging heaven and earth by literally connecting the chasm between us and the Father. As Jesus expires on the cross the veil of the temple is rent from top to bottom. What had long defined the boundary between sacred and profane is now swept away through the power of the paschal mystery – the cross and resurrection. The tree of death has become the tree of life, giving us an unshakeable hope even in the face of life’s most daunting challenges. (NS)
