On this Fiftieth Day after Pascha we beg for the gifts of the Holy Spirit just as Jesus Christ “filled the Fishermen with Wisdom by sending down the Holy Spirit” catching the whole world!
A prayer of the Divine Liturgy captures a particular point of this feast:
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, Who art everywhere present and fillest all things, Treasury of good things, and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every sin, and save our souls, O Good One!
The words of Saint Augustine are educative:
Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work may be holy,
Draw my heart O Holy Spirit, that I may love but you.
Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy.
Love in me, O Holy Spirit, that I may be holy. Amen
Happy Feast of this great Solemnity of Pentecost!
